SEMH Course Content

The Inclusion and Improvement Hub run a series of progressive short courses as well as longer term outdoor provision for children, staff and families.  Responding to parent, teacher, SENDCo and Early Help referrals, we shape individualised programmes that are designed to help children safely explore their inner world and deepen understanding of themselves.

Through fun, creativity and play, we support children to discover useful tools and techniques for managing big feelings and meeting their current life challenges. We often work with children who have had poor attachment experiences, developmental trauma and those who have neurodiversity diagnoses.   Whenever possible, we aim to work with the adults that surround the child to construct a shared, informed approach.  Together we hold the space for the child to empower themselves and find their way forward.

In the Woodland we work with four phases of emotional progression.  We use our own emotional progression assessment criteria that enable us to observe, plan, assess and track the progress of our children in the woods.

Overview of Courses:

Woodland Cubs: (Phase 1) Ongoing outdoor provision for Foundation stage and lower KS1 children.  These play-based sessions explore the foundation blocks of emotional well-being.  Through relational support, creative activities and sensory play we help children to experience feeling regulated and begin to build language for basic feelings.  We aim to give them an experience of feeling safe in their body and offer plenty of opportunity for non-verbal expression through the arts.

Woodland Wolves: (Phase 1-3)  This is a ongoing, responsive outdoor programme for KS2 children struggling to consistently access classroom provision, who present with challenging behaviour, express big feelings or perhaps lack motivation and self-confidence.  Through observation and highly reflective practice, children and parents are offered frameworks and personalised strategies to shift perception and work through challenges.

Talking My Feelings:  (Phase 2) This 5 week course is aimed at KS1 and lower KS2 children who need support to recognise big feelings, talk their feelings and explore the felt sense in the body.  We delve into the big feelings of happiness, anger, worry and sadness and introduce simple tools that help manage and regulate these feelings.

Managing Worries: (Phase 2-4) On this KS2 course we understand the purpose of anxiety and get to know our own fight/ flight brain responses.  We have compassion towards ourselves as we learn how our body reacts instinctively to protect us.  We move towards our worries with curiosity as we uncover the needs behind our anxiety. We learn how to ask for support and create a personalised toolkit to help us regulate, feel safe and understood.

Woodland Connections:  (Phase 2-3) This course is open to all KS1 & KS2 children.  It is a nature-based course for parents/ carers who wish to share time and nurture connection with their child.  We explore what can support us to connect with ourselves, others and our natural environment. A common highlight in parent feedback is the value of having 1:1 time without the distractions of daily life.  Here is an opportunity for just that.  Through fun nature-based experiences we aim deepen key relationships and experience the power of belonging, feeling safe, cared for and understood.

Building Resilience: (Phase 3-4) This 5 week Upper KS2 course takes the participants on a journey to unearth and realize their inner resilience. We offer shared models and language to help children observe and articulate their capacity to stretch themselves and achieve the unexpected.  We learn tools and techniques to shift mindset, empower ourselves and witness the positive impact this has.

Feeling Great About Myself: (Phase 3-4) This 5 week course is a chance for the child to uncover their hidden treasure, build confidence and self- esteem.  The children bring into awareness their own unique gifts and talents and learn how to own and embed their new sense of self to feel greater agency and empowerment.

Tools for Transition: (Phase 3-4) A course designed for Year 6 children to prepare for their transition to Secondary School. Using more advanced bushcraft skills we explore the aspects of ourselves that can support us to be ready and excited to join Year 7.

Year 7 Woodland Apprenticeship: (Phase 4) This is a special opportunity for Year 7 children who have graduated from previous KS2 courses in the woodland.  We invite them back to continue their learning journey this time as members of staff!
