EVENT DESCRIPTION
Research indicates that over a third of young people in England have self-harmed at some point in their lives, and suicide remains the most common cause of death for children aged between 5 and 19. How adults understand and respond to those demonstrating self-harm or suicidal behaviours is crucial, both to safeguard children and to provide them with the care and support that they need to find more positive ways forward. This half-day course is an introduction to self-harm and suicidal behaviours in children and young people. We will examine the phenomena, including definitions, risk factors, and ways of responding that promote safety and coping. We will also consider our feelings, attitudes, and values regarding self-harm and suicide and how these may impact our responses. By taking a scenario-based workshop approach, we will explore these difficult topics within the social and cultural contexts of our schools and think about ways of managing our own emotions so that we can effectively support the children and young people in our care while also looking after our own wellbeing. Finally, we will consider a graduated response to self-harm and suicidal behaviours, including when to seek further help.
